„AUSTRIAN AIRLINES“ MARKS 20 YEARS OF THE FIRST VIENNA-SKOPJE FLIGHT

With a ceremonial water bridge for the aircraft and chocolate Mozartkugeln for the passengers, Austrian and TAV celebrated the two decades from March 31st 1996, when the carrier completed the first flight between Austria’s and Macedonia’s capitals

Austrian Airlines and the Macedonian airports operator, TAV, today at “Alexander the Great” marked the 20th anniversary of the first Vienna-Skopje flight. With a ceremonial water bridge for the aircraft and chocolate Mozartkugeln for the passengers, Austrian and TAV celebrated the two decades from March 31st 1996, when the carrier completed the first flight between Austria’s and Macedonia’s capitals. Today the Austrian carrier services up to two daily flights between the Macedonian capital and Vienna.

We always had a very special and passionate relationship with Macedonia connecting your capital with our capital in Austria making sure to generate a link between our countries and to transport many passengers between the two cities – no matter if due to leisure or business reasons.  In 2015 this meant having more than 97 000 passengers on board of our flights. 200 Macedonian companies have signed up for our Corporate Program PPB which again shows how important our flights are to support business relationships with MK - said Alexander Tolweth, the company’s regional director.

During the last 20 years, Austrian Airlines has been a reliable partner for business and leisure travelers between Skopje and the Austrian hub in Vienna. Therefore Austrian Airlines offers the ideal connection to the dense Austrian network with a total of around 130 destinations in 58 countries.

Today we’re celebrating a great milestone, 20 years from the first Vienna-Skopje flight. For one route to continuously exist that long and to have a constant high demand, speaks about its attractiveness but also about the services that Austrian offers. TAV sees a strong partner in this company, one that precisely, on time and safely transfers passengers from Skopje to the European destinations. At the same time, through the Vienna airport, it offers them a direct connection with the other continents. I honestly hope that this partnership will last for many years and together we’ll mark even bigger milestones - stated Zoran Krstevski, TAV Macedonia’s General Manager.

Besides the attractive connections passengers of Austrian Airlines also benefit from the high reliability of Austrian flights: In the first quarter of 2016, the Austrian carrier operated a total of 28,909 flights deploying 76 aircraft, or about 318 flights per day. The regularity of operation was 98.7 percent, whereas the punctuality rate on departure was 90.5 percent. According to “FlightStats”, Austrian Airlines was the second most punctual airline in the world in March 2016, with a punctuality rate on arrival of 90.3 percent.

We are also very happy that OS is growing and we are constantly introducing new destinations: recently we openend SHA, as of Sep we will fly to HKG and as of the winter schedule we are flying to Havana. Also we are currently receiving our new Embraer fleet which ensures a great new product – which will also be partly flown to SKP – so this is good news - said Tolweth.

Thanks to its favorable geographical location at the heart of Europe, the Austrian hub at Vienna International Airport is the ideal gateway between East and West. The airport’s minimum time of transfer of 25 minutes is unique among the world’s hubs and is of special value to the passengers transferring with Austrian to Europe, North America or Asia. Austrian Airlines offers six lounges in its Austrian Star Alliance Terminal. Passengers are welcome to enjoy an assortment of delicacies from Austria and from around the world in all lounges. They are supplied by DO & CO and are complemented by a comprehensive selection of national and international beverages.

With its work, Austrian Airlines contributes into the positive results of Macedonia’s aviation industry. TAV Macedonia finished 2015 with a 22% increase in the total number of passengers at two Macedonian airports - Alexander the Great in Skopje  and  St. Paul the Apostle in Ohrid, reaching 1,560,381 passengers. The trend of increased traffic continues this year. In the first four months of 2016 through both Macedonian airports transported were 486,968 passengers, which is increase of 28% compared to the same period in 2015. At the same time, number of operations (landings and take-offs) at both airports increased by 15%.
