TAV AND WIZZ AIR CELEBRATE 2 MILLION PASSENGERS AT MACEDONIAN AIRPORTS

TAV Macedonia, the company that operates the two airports – Skopje Alexander the Great and Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle and WizzAir, the largest low-cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe, today celebrate a major milestone with two million passengers carried on this airline’s low fare routes in Macedonia.

-We are thrilled to celebrate this memorable milestone of two million WIZZ passengers to and from Macedonia. We started our operations in 2011 in Macedonia and since then, we have earned the trust and loyalty of our Macedonian passengers, becoming the airline of choice in the country. With the establishment of our Skopje base and the continuous expansion of our low-fare network, we created a number of local jobs while stimulating tourism and the aviation industry. We now have three aircraft based in Skopje, each operated by Macedonian crews speaking the local language and providing excellent on-board service on every flight. We will keep on delivering low fares and services to best meet the needs of the Macedonian traveling public, said Gyorgy Abran, WizzAir’s Chief Commercial Officer.

Underlining its commitment to the country, WizzAir recently announced three new routes from Skopje connecting the city with three European capitals, Berlin, Bratislava and Copenhagen. With the new routes, the airline has more than one million seats on sale for 2016, representing a capacity growth of 22% from 2015.

-Today we mark nearly five years and two million passengers with the renowned low cost airline WizzAir that for TAV Macedonia means a significant achievement in the development of the airports. In very short time many new flights to the European capitals were introduced. The flying became a privilege to all citizens due to the affordable prices of the air-tickets that enabled many travelers, among which are young people, whole families, as well as our expatriates from the diaspora to travel more often. On the other hand, many tourists and businessman have started to discover Macedonia. This choice of destinations and the marketing policies of WizzAir and TAV holding, as well as the Government subsidies for low cost airlines, contributed Skopje and Ohrid Airports to become the fastest growing airports in the region, said Zoran Krstevski, TAV Macedonia General Manager.

In terms of passengers carried, WizzAir has 49,2% market share at the two Macedonian airports in 2015. It offers low cost routes to 24 destinations from Skopje and Оhrid airportс, connecting the Macedonian citizens with 11 countries.

TAV Macedonia ended 2015 with 22% increase in the total number of passengers at both Macedonian airports – Skopje Alexander the Great and Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle, reaching 1.560.381 passengers. At the same time, the total number of operations was 15.510, with an increase of 11%.

The first WizzAir flight took off from Skopje in June 2011 and since then the airline has constantly expanded its Macedonian network. In October 2012 the airline has established its base operations in Skopje and now has three aircrafts and 84 employees based in Skopje. In June 2015, WizzAir started its operations from Ohrid Airport.
